井の中の蛙大海を知らず

"A frog in a well does not know the great sea"

We all need to expand our perspectives, explore outside our normal tastes, and soak up new experiences.

I am Matthew the Carpenter

Holding history, creating the future.

I love Carpentry, I love working with wood, understanding how it wants to be worked, and making beautiful functional furniture from it.

Tree's are such a wonderful Creation, an amazing gift to mankind, complex, versatile and varied. Learning how to work with the wood takes endurance, time, skill and knowledge.

I have been working with wood since I can remember, I have worked in the carpentry industry for over 18 years now, Early on I became increasingly frustrated at the common lack of 'Pride in the workmanship' within the industry, I continued to gain knowledge and hone my skills until 1 day, I watched a video of Japanese carpenters making intricate joints with very few tools, mostly hand tools and how they fitted together so perfectly and seeing the Daiku (Japanese Carpenter) take so much pride in their work, treating their tools, wood and work with such respect. I knew from then on I wanted to work towards becoming Daiku.

So without a Master to guide and teach me, I embarked on a journey to learn and teach myself as much as I could. I imported some old Japanese hand tools, restore them and use them in my work.

Now I have reached a level I can combine my knowledge and love for wood with the skills I learnt in becoming Daiku to design and produce beautiful functional furniture for you to enjoy.

I continue to buy and restore Japanese tools, I also repair tools for other carpenters and offer a local chisel and plane sharpening service.
